At the state council executive meeting held the other day, Premier Li Keqiang stated that many fields of health service industry including medical nursing, health recovery, and health preservation are weak links of modern service industry. Accelerating the development of health service industry is not only a vital measure to satisfy the mass of people’s urgent demands, enhance the health quality of all the nation and improve livelihood, but also a dynamic engine to advance service industry, create jobs effectively, form a new point of economic increase and promote economic transformation and upgrade.
Some relative statistics show that at present our country’s heath service industry is just beginning. It is far behind that of advanced countries and even a good distance behind some developing countries. Therefore, it is an extremely urgent task to speed up its development.

“Health Industry is developing rapidly without being hindered and will soon become another new dynamic to push the world’s economy foreward in place of IT industry.” said Huang Hailang at the 1st China (Guilin) Top Forum On Innovation & Development of International Health Preservation Service Industry held in Guilin, Guangxi. Huang is vice-president of China Federation of Commerce in Canada, vice-president of China Research Institute of Bethune’s Thought and president of Xinhexin Group co. ltd.
According to a survey issued by the World Health Organization, said Huang Hailang, only 5% of the world’s people meet the health standard, people who are diagnosed to suffer from different diseases make 20%, and the remaining 75% are sub-healthy.
Huang added, in the light of international experience, when a country’s average GDP reaches 3,000 US dollars, the market of health preservation and the aged caring industry will enlarge swiftly. China has entered the “threshold”.
Although already inside the “threshold”, China’s health service industry is just at the beginning compared with developed and even developing countries. Statistics show that at present the annual income of China’s health service industry is 90 billion US dollars, while that of American health service industry is more than 1,000 billion US dollars. The annual output value of China’s health service industry is around 5% of GDP, but the figure of the US was up to 17.6% in 2007.
“Therefore China’s health Service industry is on the verge of rising.” said Huang Hailang.
Executive director of the Health Preservation Research Institute of China’s Chinese Medicine Academy Huang Mingda agreed with him on the point. He said that with the development of the whole service industry and especially the integrative development of health preservation there will be great room for the development of health service as the third industry.
“In the field of health preservation, China makes the largest demand on the world. Meanwhile, Human health is a new crucial challenge we are faced with.” Huang Mingda told the reporter. If we calculate according to present American average consumption of health products per capita, China will enjoy an increase of 17,400 billion yuan RMB. So the development of health service industry will play a great role in increasing China’s economy, enlarging consumption market and creating jobs.

Time to dig gold
Experts present at the meeting think that health problems in China are changing. Non-infectious chronic diseases like high blood sugar, high blood pressure and tumor appear more often and have become the major causes of death instead of contagious diseases. In addition in our country 15% people suffer mental diseases, including 16 million seriously sick patients and 30 million victims of depression, 30 to 40 million teenagers with psychological problems and 6 million old people with senile dementia. And one million people attempt suicide while two hundred thousand commit suicide.
“A study conducted by Harvard University states clearly that 80% diseases, especially heart disease and diabetes, 70% paralytic stroke and 50% cancer can be prevented through health preservation and good living habits.” said Cheng Xuezhong, chairman of the World’s  Association of Health Industry and head of Beijing Academy of Medical Sciences.
In Cheng Xuezhong’s opinion, the demands for medical and health services are growing, which appeals for an urgent development of health preservation service industry.
“Nowadays health service has become a new industry that grows most rapidly.” Yu Xiaodong, director of the Public Nutrition Improvement Office of the National Development And Reform Commission said to the interviewing reporter of China’s Economy Times. “The global medical and healthy travel increases by 20% to 30% annually, which stimulated a consumption twice as much as general travel does and thus brings a considerable income to destinations.”
