The ten months’ collection and abstraction of “Hunan Spirit” has ended. The Propaganda Office of the Provincial Party Committee released at the press conference this morning that through wide collection and repeated abstraction, with the masses of people’s active participation, and under the approval of the standing committee of the Party “Hunan Spirit” is stated as loyalty, responsibility, practicality and prosperity.
Zhang Zhichu, deputy head of the Propaganda Department of the Provincial Party Committee and director of the Collection & Abstraction Office, released the news. At the conference, Zhang Zhichu explained the contents of “Hunan Spirit”.
The contents of “Hunan Spirit” are abundant and profound. “Loyalty” makes the core of “Hunan Spirit”. It originates from the four Chinese characters “Zhong, Xiao, Lian,Jie”(which mean being devoted, performing filial piety, being honest and clean and having moral integrity respectively). It has absorbed the nutrients of such epigrams as “Care about first what the nation cares about” and “Put limited life in unlimited service of the people” of Hunan culture. It represents a national passion and accords with the eternal demands that a nation, a state, a community, a family should be devoted to the people and the country.
“Responsibility” displays undertaking. It is the feature of “Hunan Spirit”. The feature comes from Wang Fuzhi’s “The Six Classics teach me what I should be, and I am ready to have my body buried for the country” and Chairman Mao’s “With a great aspiration and a spirit of sacrificing our lives, we dare to change the world into a new one”. It is a generalization of the temperaments of “ enduring bitterness, making all efforts and exercising forbearance” of the Hunan people. It agrees with the requirement that one should be responsible for the nation, the people, the country and the Party.
“Practicality” shows the style of Hunan people. It is the essence of “Hunan Spirit”. Hunan people have an excellent style of study since ancient times. They seek the truth from facts, put learning into practice and combine knowledge with actions. Qu Yuan “explored up and down however long and tough the way was”. Yuanlu Academic set “seeking the truth from facts” as its school motto. Mao Zedong developed and widen it, with which to guide China’s revolution and construction. He even elevated “seeking the truth from facts” as the ideological line of the Party. “Seeking the truth” demonstrates the spirit of being determined and practical, advocating science, longing for  the truth and exploring the law.
“Prosperity” indicates the destination of Hunan’s development. It is what “Hunan Spirit” runs after.  It is also what Hunan people dare to be pioneers, keep forging ahead, make innovations and go all out to achieve. Wei Yuan “looked at the world with his eyes wide open ”. Tan Citong was willing to die in order to warn his countrymen in the institutional reform. In particular, Mao Zedong and his comrades fought bravely in blood to found the Party, the Army and New China. Yuan Longping “changed the world with one fice seed”. The Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government have set a general grand goal to prosper and strengthen Hunan. To accomplish it, the strategic tasks of “four changes and two molds” and “two speeding-ups” are put forward. “Prosperity” goes through all of them.
Looking at it from the contents, each aspect of “Hunan Spirit” is compactly related to the others. The eight Chinese characters reflect concentratively the characteristics of Hunan people’s mind, temperament, thought, sentiment, action, style and spiritual pursuing. Its presentation is clear, clean, penetrating, firm and grand. And it reads with rhythm and rhyme. Besides it is convenient for propaganda and promotion.  (translated by Yi Daoqun)
