Celebrating the 65th Anniversary Of the Publication Of “the May Day Slogans”

“What mobilizes the whole country is wording.”(quoted from Exploring The Nature Of Writing of Liu Xie’s book Wenxindiaolong, the title meaning surveying writing). I was deeply touched when I read “the May Day Slogans” published by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) 65 years ago. The slogans sound like rings jingling with every meaningful word, like drums with every arousing sound and like bugles urging people to advance.
There are altogether 23 slogans, issued on April 30,1948. Then the Anti-Japanese War had already ended with a great victory and the consequence of “two destinies and two futures” that China was faced with had become evident. Half of the KMT forces had been wiped out and Chiang Kai shek’s dictatorship and autocratic ruling would soon be overthrown thoroughly. The slogans issued on this very occasion were not only resounding bugles to declare a decisive fight of the bright over the black, but also heavy shells cast over the reactionary force headed by Chiang Kai shek. They were even the whole united nation’s heroic declaration of “advancing hand in hand” led by the CCP. The historic and current value of the slogans are uncountable.
As a close friend of the CCP, China Democratic League, from its birthday---March 19, 1941, stuck firmly and definitely to the political viewpoint of “opposing dictatorship and demanding democracy, opposing civil war and demanding peace”, and eventually won the CCP’s close attention and incomparable trust. Mutual political faiths constructed a solid base for the growing relationship between the Democratic League and the Communist Party, and composed a glorious chapter of “sharing honor or disgrace” in perfect sympathy with each other”. The majestic and resounding slogans are the crystal of this friendship.
That was a violently changing time. With the development of liberation war, people of ideas and integrity in democratic parties began to stand without hesitation on the position of resolutely fighting hand in hand with the CCP against Chiang Kai shek & American reactionaries, and to be devoted advisers willingly and consciously to the CCP. Sheng Junru, one of the famous “seven noble men”, proposed before the KMT parliament convened that the CCP declare by telegraph to all the democratic parties to convene national people’s representatives and establish a democratic unition government. Therefore, a draft of “the May Day slogans”, which represented the whole nation’s interests and expressed the CCP’s political views and policies, emerged as the time required. The original fifth slogan was “The working class is the leader of the Chinese Revolution, the working class in the liberated area is the master of new China, and take an active part in achieving an early victory of the Chinese Revolution.” The slogan was then revised by Mao Tsedong as “All the democratic parties and worthy persons of people’s organizations, immediately hold a political consultative conference to discuss the convention of the People’s Congress and the establishment of a coalition government. Mao’s revision embodied his clear awareness of the role of the united front in the revolutionary process and his sincerity and determination about the establishment of the coalition government . It also indicated the birth of a new party system, played the musical chapter of founding a state through consultation and marked a new era when the CCP would still unite and cooperate with democratic parties.
History has proved that the issue of “the May Day Slogans” is a vital milestone in the development of our country’s united front and multi-party’s cooperation.
After the foundation of new China, the CCP proceeded to value the position and role of democratic parties. President Zhang Lan of the Democratic League was logically elected vice-chairman of the People’s Republic of China. Today China Democratic League has 200,000 members, making a party that is the largest in scale, the greatest in influence and the most in number. In the new historical era, the nature, the position and the role of the Democratic League as a participant party in government are definitely written in the state’s Constitution.
Today we are standing at a new starting point of history. To push forth the economic, political and cultural construction with Chinese characteristics, to maintain the stable and united political situation so as to fulfill the various tasks proposed by the Party’s 18th Convention and to realize China dream in all fields, we spare no wisdom to dedicate our advice, and nor do we spare efforts to do hard work. With the resolute leadership of the central committee of the Communist Party headed by Xi Jinping as general secretary and the participation and hard work of hundreds of thousands of party members and billions of people, we are confident in China’s tomorrow!
We firmly believe that under the leadership of the CCP, the road for democratic parties’ “participating in remarking government through political consultation and democratic supervision” will become broader and broader.
May “the May Day Slogans” that mobilizes the whole country endure!
