Nine Unique Skills of Health Preservation From Ancient People

“One virtue”
Health preservation expert Lv Kun in the Ming Dynasty says, “Benevolence and virtue can prolong longevity, so cultivating virtue is the key to health cultivation.”
“Two characters”
Literature master Su Dongpo in the Song Dynasty thought that life lies in the two characters of  “An” and “He”. “ An” means calm and “He” means satisfaction. “With a calm heart I will feel I myself is nobody. With a satisfied heart I will be pleased with the environment.”
“Three giving-ups”
Confucius says, “A noble man has to give up three things; in youth when one is not fully developed physiologically one should avoid excessive sex; in adulthood when one is vigorous, one should prevent fight; and at an old age when one’s vitality declines, one should abandon seeking gains.”
“Four ways”
Doctor Wan Mizai in the Ming Dynasty says, “There are four ways to keep healthy: first decreasing desires, second taking careful actions,third following seasons and fourth getting rid of diseases.”
“Five awarenesses”
Zhou Shouzhong in the Song Dynasty says, “ being aware of the harm of happiness and fury to his nature, one will broaden his heart; Knowing the wound of thinking and worrying to his spirit, one will keep his inner tranquility; Realizing the damage of over-speaking to his breathing, one will shut up his mouth; being informed of the destruction of grief and delight to his longevity,one will keep them under control; having the knowledge of the ruin of lust to his life, one will restrain himself away from it.”
“Six reductions”
Doctor Jiang Qishi in the Ming Dynasty says, “Reduce desires to maintain one’s essence; reduce worries to preserve one’s spirit; reduce anger to cultivate one’s liver; reduce overwork to foster once strength; reduce thinking to strengthen one’s heart; and reduce sadness to better one’s lung.”
Seven eatings
“Seven eatings”
Health-preserving expert Shi Jincheng in the Qing Dynasty points out, “eat early but not too late; eat slowly but not too fast; eat almost enough but not to be too full; eat fresh and thin but not too fat or salty food; eat when food is warm but not cold; eat food that is soft and weak but not hard or solid; drink tea and brush the teeth after eating to cleanse them.”.
Eight pleasures
Shi Jincheng also presented his eight pleasures.They are: the pleasure of sitting still, the pleasure of reading a book, the pleasure of watching flowers, the pleasure of enjoying the moon,  the pleasure of appreciating drawings, the pleasure of writing, the pleasure of singing loudly and wildly, and the pleasure of lying without worries.
Nine things for thinking
Confucius says, “A noble man has nine things for thinking: when looking think of seeing clearly; when listening think of hearing sharply; when facing a beauty, think of being gentle; when behaving think of being polite; when speaking think of being truthful; when treating others think of being respectful; when having questions think of asking for answers; when getting angry think of being self-restrained; when seeing virtue think of following suit.”(translated by Yi Daoqun)
