China’s famous calligrapher and painter Wei Hengbin’s solo exhibition named success with brush and ink opened at China Military Museum, Beijing at 10:08 on November 16, 2014.

The exhibition was jointly hosted by China Qingfeng Painting and Calligraphy Association and China Artistic Dissemination Co., Ltd., undertaken by Weiyuan International Painting and Calligraphy Institute, China International Society for Calligraphic Artists and co-organized by Zhizheng Biotechnology Development Co., Ltd., China Cultural Park for Buddhism, Beijing Shengshichangfu Ceramics Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Liangjian Wine Group.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition was conducted by Mr. Qian Long, famous host of Liaoning TV Station and promoter of sinology.  Some leaders from the administration departments of the central government, and retired generals and ministers were present at the activity.  Over 200 well-known artists and entrepreneurs, as well as calligraphy and painting lovers coming from all parts of China attended the opening ceremony.

Mr. Wei Hengbin is a descendant of Wei Zheng, prime minister of Tang Dynasty (618-907) and the five-generation offspring of Weiyuan, Shaoyang-born and Shaoyang-bred famous thinker, politician and reformer in modern times (later Qing Dynasty).  Now Mr. Wei Hengbin owns over 70 titles in the realm of China’s literature and arts.  Being born in a well-educated family, he is good at all kinds of calligraphy and has developed his own style.

At this exhibition over 150 painting and calligraphy works were displayed.  The most attractive of his works are those connected with Chinese calligraphy, called in China leader of all art forms, which can be divided into five categories: the seal character (zhuan), The official or clerical script (li), the regular script (kai), the running hand (xing) and the cursive hand (cao). His style of calligraphy, which combines swiftness with mildness, is so unique that he finally establishes himself as one of the most prominent calligraphers of the time. His traditional Chinese paintings, including landscapes, flower-and-bird paintings, as well as bamboo or wood engravings, faux bamboo books, are also of artistic and enjoyable value. They seem to come at any time from things around you but are always filled with deep implications.

The exhibition of Mr. Wei Hengbin’s this time gave the visitors an uncommon visual feast, which, holding fast to socialist core values,  comprises healthy works of a variety of artistic forms.  Considering calligraphy as important as food and clothing for sustenance, Mr. Wei Hengbin, over seventy years of age, has spent decades of his time studying calligraphic art of ancient China and now becomes a master of calligraphy himself.  A batch of his painting and calligraphy works were collected by the national museum on June 11, 2013 after they finished space travel with Shenzhou-10 Spacecraft, which makes him the first person in China who has sent into space more painting and calligraphy works of the highest quality.

Comprehensively viewing the artistic and aesthetic value of his painting and calligraphy works, you can see that the traditional humanistic connotations and abundant national spirit of the Chinese painting and calligraphy arts are expressed elegantly, magnanimously and naturally. The artistic conception shown in his works is inseparable from his long-time learning, thinking and pursuing the essence of literature.  His artistic attainments in both painting and calligraphy are credited to his several decades of literary practice and pursuance of the virtuous persons in both ancient and modern times. We hereby wish Mr. Wei Hengbin a complete success in the exhibition and even more brilliant achievements in his later artistic career.
