At 9:58 a.m. on December 27, 2014, Shaoyang First Art Festival “Beautiful Shaoyang” opened grandly at Daxitang Cultural Communication Co., Ltd. located at Jiangbei of Shaoyang. Artists coming from all parts of China gathered to have a great view of the art festival and enjoy the charm of Shaoyang from their artistic point of view. Li Lanjun, president of Shaoyang International Culture Association and former mayor of Shaoyang Municipal Government attended the opening ceremony with deputy secretaries-general Ms Hou Qiuyue and Mr. Zeng Zhenhua as well as the web editors of the association and then they watched meticulous (Gongbi) paintings and wood-block prints at Daxitang.
The art festival lasted 15 days, with 9 exhibition areas distributing in Daxiang District, Shuangqing District and Beita District. About one thousand pieces of artist works selected from over twenty thousand ones were displayed, including traditional Chinese paintings, wood-block prints, oil paintings, gouaches, bamboo and wood engravings, paper-cutting, arts and crafts and art design works. The festival attracted a lot of people, old and young, as there were so many paintings suitable for all ages.
In order to make the festival more attractive, the organizing committee of the festival invited famous painters from all parts of China, including well-known Chen Baiyi, called the second People’s Artist, who displayed his 5 or 6 paintings and held ten artistic forums during the festival.
Though Shaoyang is located in the southwest of Hunan, it is a city famous for painting with a long artistic history. It is said that China Artists Association has nearly 40 Shangyang-born members. Famous painters Chen Baiyi, Huang Tieshan, Chen Xichuan，LiXiqin，Jiang Kun, He Jianguo, Li Zijian, Wang Wenming, who enjoy high reputation both at home and abroad, come from Shaoyang.
This art festival is the first large-scale cultural activity choosing art as its theme in the history of Shaoyang and among all the prefecture-level cities in Hunan Province, Shaoyang is the first one to have held an artistic festival. In order to forge a cultural brand based on Shaoyang’s beautiful hills and rivers with its unique artistic charm, Shaoyang Municipal Party Committee and Shaoyang Government decided to hold this artistic festival which was cosponsored by the Publicity Department of the municipal Party Committee, the municipal Culture, Broadcast & News Bureau, the municipal Literary Federation and the municipal Artists Association.
