World-famous Goose--Wugang Goose

Wugang goose is a fine domestic bird and a fine breed of the same kind in Hunan. According to the Historical Records Of Wugang , raising geese in Wugang City has a history of 500 years. During Emperor Jiajing’s period, geese were raised in large numbers, In the Qing Dynasty, Wugang goose was chosen as a royal tribute to mortgage tax,because its flesh was tender, delicious and good to eat. Wugang enjoys the fame of the Land Of Goose and Wugang goose has the reputation of a famous breed. In 1981, Wugang goose was listed in The Records Of Poultry And Livestock Breeds Of Hunan, after the investigation and appraisal by Hunan Poultry & Livestock Research Institute. In the same year, the number of geese raised in the goose base reached 800 thousand . It is sold inside and outside Hunan. Goose raising is an industry with special superiority in Wugang City. Wugang goose, together with Xiang (Hunan) Lotus Seed and Ningxiang (County) Pig, is praised as “three treasures of Hunan”.
Properties
Wugang Goose has a medium build with a long bow-like neck. It always holds up its head displaying a high posture.Its feather is white or gray. An adult male goose weighs 7-8 kg, while a female one weighs 6-7kg. A merchandise meat goose weighs 4-4.5kg. Its beak and forehead tumor takes on the color of brass, its webs the color of copper. Its sound is loud and clear, like that of a brass gong, which can be heard one thousand meters away. Because of its sonorous gong-like sound , it gets the name of “ brass gong goose”. The goose has a round forehead tumor , short and thick legs, wide, big and thick webs, strong and long wings and well- developed thoracic muscles. It has a good ability of flying. Its wings and webs are excellent materials.for soy-stewed dish. Its body is made into toasted goose or soy-stewed goose for sale. It can be cooked with goose blood or with rice-flour noodles, or just steamed in clear soup, each being a tasty dish for home food to eat.
Wugang goose has thin skin and tender flesh. Its flesh is dark red like beef but softer and tenderer than beef. Its fat is much less than that of other breeds. According to the detection, goose contains 17.8-18.2% protein, 21.5-22.8% fat and plentiful lysine which is 30% more than that in chicken. The fat in the goose is mostly non-saturant, which the human body needs. It can prevent the blood vessel from getting hard and the thrombus from forming. In August, 1981, experts and professors from Hunan Poultry & Livestock Research Institute and Hunan Agricultural University, having compare all the main four breeds of geese in the province, considered that Wugang goose is the best with its high quality flesh and excellent taste.
Output and economic value
The number of geese raised in a year is 700---1000 thousand, of which 500 thousand are precessed into commodities to be sold to big cities in Hunan and neighboring Guangdong and Guangxi provinces. There are over thirty processing businesses in the urban area. The annual output value of the products traded outside is 15 million yuan. Goose feather is a good material for making feather products like clothes and badmintons. Each goose can bring a profit of 20 yuan to the raiser. The cultivation is mainly a household model. Generally, most households each raises about 20, hundreds of them 50---100, and dozens of them 100---300. Goose raising benefits the local people a lot.
Growth habits
Wugang Goose, with a good appetite, feeds on a variety of grass. It can find food in the fields and under bushes. Sweet potato and corn are perfect food for it.A young goose can eat ready-food the next day of its coming out of the shell. Seven days later, it can find food for itself. From 20 to 40 days of its birth, its capacity for eating is the biggest, more than 1.5 kg a day. After 40 days, the capacity decreases to 1 kg per day. After 70 days , it can grow to 4kg. It is time to put it on the market. An adult female goose will lay eggs from August to nest February, altogether 30---40. Each egg weigs150---200g. A breeding goose can be kept for 3---5 years. Geese are not afraid of humans and do not like to walk about. So it is convenient to raise geese. Where there is grass, geese can be raised.
Distribution area
Wugang Goose spread mainly in the area of Wugang City. Large scales of cultivation is along the Zijiang River and its branches. Household raising depends on small streams, paddy fields and pools. In neighboring counties like Longhui, Dongkou, Xinning, Chengbu and Suining, small numbers of geese are raised not for commodity but for the raiser’s own food.
Natural characteristics of the area
Wugang is positioned in the southwest of Hunan, in the climate of subtropical moist zone.The weather is mild, and there are plentiful rainfalls and nearly 300 days without frost, which is agreeable to the growth of crops, plants and grass. More than 30 kinds of plants and grass are fit for geese to eat. So food for geese is in abundance in a year. The area is far from big cities. There are almost no factories or mines. The agriculture is in a naturally ecological environment which, half-primitive and half-modern, is not polluted. The air is fresh and the water is clear. Thus Wugang goose is green food.And the goose cultivation is also environmentally-friendly.
Thanks to the distinctive ecological environment, Wugang Goose has developed into a unique famous brand breed . And a variety of goose products of high quality have been promoted to  markets inside and outside Hunan province. The fine quality and reasonable price have won its consumers’ praises.
