Xinning Orange

Xinning orange is a new breed developed from Washington Orange. It has been planted in Xinning County for nearly 60 years. From 1979 to 1981, it was appraised as a fine plant of the first class successively for thee years at the National Orange Appraisal Conference hosted by China’s Research Center. In 1980, Xinning County was approved by the Ministry Of Agriculture  and the Department Of Foreign Trade as one of the four national bases of orange production and exportation, after it became a national base of orange production. Over 20 years’ development, the county , with an area of one hundred thousand mu for production, can produce sixty to seventy thousand tons annually. Xinning orange looks good with its smooth peel and yellow-red fruit color, and tastes good with its tender, fragrant and properly sour-sweet flesh. It was awarded a gold prizes for many times as fine agricultural produce by the Ministry Of Agriculture and The Department Of Agriculture of Hunan. It is sold at large markets in big cities such as Hong Kong and Macao and shipped to Southeast Asia, Canada, Russia and other countries. In 2002, it won the Certificate Of Top Brand Agricultural Produce Of Hunan.
After a long time of productive practice and scientific research, a complete technological system of planting has been developed. The xcellent ecological environment and advanced planting techniques are the tow main factors which make Xinning orange look good and taste good, its peel smooth, its color brightly orange-red, its flesh sweet, fragrant and full of juice. According to the detection, its sugar proportion is 12.%---13%, its acidity 1.1%---1.14%, and the rate is 11.4 :1. The dissolvable substance amounts to 12%---13%. After being picked, each fruit is wrapped in plastic bag to keep fresh and stored until the next April and May. When marketed, it remains originally tasty.
Because of its fine quality, Xinning orange won a gold medal at the National Exposition Of Fine Agricultural Produce held by the Ministry Of Agriculture. From 1997 to 1999, it was granted a gold prize annually at the fruit quality competitions in Hunan. In 1990, Xinning orange was promoted as a fine breed to most districts of Hunan and Guangxi, Jiangxi, Hubei, Zhejiang provices.
Nowadays, the orange production is the main industry of Xinning, its annual output value being two hundred million RMB yuan, which is half of Xinning’s agricultural production, so that it promotes the development of such industries as tourism, transportation, procession and cuisines. In order to meet the demands of markets and to increase its competitive power, Xinning County has set up a park of 3.7 hectares to develop improved varieties free from viruses. It has brought in twenty new breeds from abroad. This has laid a foundation of its sustainable development.
